A Cook County jury has awarded the family of a Chicago child $3 million in a medical malpractice suit against Cook County Hospital, according to the family's attorney.

The verdict Wednesday came after a weeklong trial over problems arising from the July 1995 birth of the child, which damaged nerves in her right arm and hand, attorney Kathleen Zellner said.

The child, who is 4, can't raise her hand over her head or open or close her hand, Zellner said.
